BOATS IN THE FOG

I made Boats in the Fog while out on my paddleboard early one foggy morning. I often paddle around looking for different ways of photographing the sea, as being on the water gives me viewpoints and perspectives that I wouldn’t get from the shore.

What caught my attention here was the way the sailing boats were only just visible through the mist, with the sun beginning to break through above them and its light reflected in the gentle ripples across the foreground.

I stayed out there as the fog shifted and the boats gradually appeared and disappeared in the distance. There was very little colour in the scene, so black and white felt completely natural and allowed me to concentrate on the light, reflections and layers of mist.

What I particularly like is the sense of depth β€” the darker water in the foreground slowly disappearing into the fog until the boats are almost lost in it.
