COFETE IN MONOCHROME

I photographed Cofete in Monochrome late in the day on the west coast of Fuerteventura. Cofete is one of my favourite places to be, especially around dawn or dusk when I can sometimes have the whole beach almost to myself.

Reaching it means crossing the mountains on a narrow, winding road, and when the beach finally opens out below you, the scale of the place is difficult to take in.

On this particular evening it was how empty the landscape felt that caught my attention. The long beach stretched beneath the dark mountain ridge with almost nothing else in sight. I stayed as the light began to fade and the scene gradually became more about shape, tone and atmosphere than colour.

Black and white felt completely natural for this photograph. It brought out the sweep of the shoreline, the mountains behind it and the extraordinary openness of Cofete. The panoramic format also suited the landscape and helped preserve that feeling of scale.
