‍ ‍I photographed Surfing Solitude in Hossegor on the south west coast of France during the winter surf season. What caught my attention was the simplicity of the scene, with one surfer walking along an almost empty beach and the sea stretching away behind him.

I liked how small the figure appeared against all that open space. There was very little in the frame, which is exactly what appealed to me. I chose black and white because it reduced the photograph even further to the surfer, the bands of sea and sand, and the quiet atmosphere of the moment.

For me, this photograph is as much about the space around the surfer as the surfer himself.
