I photographed Through the Breakers in Fuerteventura while watching a sailing boat making its way through the rough sea. The part I really liked was that the boat itself had almost completely disappeared behind the breaking waves, leaving only the sails visible above the water.
For me, that makes the photograph much more interesting than simply showing the whole boat. The sails give you just enough information to understand what is happening, while the scale of the breakers becomes much more apparent because so much of the vessel is hidden from view.
I chose black and white because it suited the shapes and tones of the scene and kept the attention on the sails and the movement of the sea. There is also a slightly mysterious quality to the photograph, as you are left imagining the boat pushing its way through all that water beneath the sails.
