What drew me to Hibiscus In Yellow was the wonderful brightness of the flower. I loved the clean yellow petals and the contrasting colour at its centre, which immediately gave the flower its own character.
I wanted to photograph it very simply, with nothing around it competing for attention. Against the pale background, the shape of the petals and the changes in tone across the yellow become much easier to see.
One of the reasons I enjoy photographing hibiscus is that every flower seems to offer something different. With this one it was the combination of colour, simplicity and the almost graphic shape of the flower that made me want to photograph it.
