I have returned to photographing hibiscus flowers many times in the Canary Islands. What keeps drawing me back is how much their character changes with the light, the angle and the background.
With this flower, it was the fine structure of the petals and the intensity of the fuchsia pink against the pale background that held my attention. I wanted the bloom completely on its own so that the colour, texture and shape became the whole photograph.
I chose a square composition because it gives the image a simple, almost graphic quality. At larger sizes, the detail and delicate structure within the petals become even more noticeable.
