I photographed Embla in the New Forest National Park. I was brought up around horses and have always felt very comfortable in their company, so I tend to spend time watching them before I decide to make a photograph.
What caught my attention with Embla was the way she looked directly towards me while her mane moved in the breeze. There was something very calm and self-assured about her expression, and I waited for that moment of eye contact before taking the photograph.
I chose black and white because it keeps the attention on her expression, the texture of her mane and the simple shape of the horse against the landscape. For me, it is the quiet character and presence of Embla that make the image work.
