I photographed Marlboro Man on a beach near Tarifa in southern Spain, where I was living on a ranch at the time. I used to walk along this beach regularly with my camera and would often see people riding horses, walking their dogs or heading out to surf.
What I love about this photograph is the sense of freedom it conveys. It is such a simple scene — a man riding his horse along the beach with his dog running beside him — but to me it represents a wonderfully uncomplicated and enriching way of life that you can still come across in parts of Spain.
There was no planning involved. I simply saw the three of them moving together along the shoreline and knew immediately that I wanted to photograph it. The black and white treatment seemed right for the image, stripping the scene back to the rider, the horse, the dog and the open beach.
For me, Marlboro Man is really about that feeling of space, freedom and a way of life that feels increasingly rare.
