I came across Shadow while travelling through southern Spain. He was a beautiful black horse with a huge amount of character, and from the moment he saw me he seemed genuinely excited and curious about what I was doing.
He leaned towards me as though he wanted to investigate, and I loved the directness of his expression. There was something playful and engaging about him that made the photograph feel much more like an encounter than a formal horse portrait.
I chose black and white because it keeps the attention on his face, expression and the rich tones of his coat. For me, the photograph is really about his personality and that unexpected moment of connection between us.
