Shining Strength II was photographed in Spain, where I have travelled extensively over the years photographing horses in different regions and surroundings. This stallion had just been hosed down, and the water had darkened his coat while the sunlight caught the surface, revealing the strength and definition of his body. His long golden mane created a striking contrast against the darker coat and immediately drew my attention.
I have always enjoyed photographing horses in Spain because each encounter is different, and I tend to respond to the individual animal rather than arrive with a fixed photograph in mind. With this stallion, it was his physical presence, the sheen of the wet coat and the contrast of the mane that made the moment work for me. Shining Strength II is available as a limited-edition fine art horse photograph and has a particularly strong presence at larger scale.
