Snow Horses was made during a heavy winter snowfall, when I came across a small group of horses sheltering beneath the trees. What caught my attention was the contrast between the dark shapes of the horses and the softness of the snow falling around them. I stayed with the scene, watching and waiting until the group settled into a composition that felt right.
I still remember how cold I was while making this photograph — by the end, my shutter finger was beginning to freeze — but I didn’t want to leave while the atmosphere was so special. The falling snow softened everything around the horses and gave the scene a quiet, almost dreamlike quality.
