I made The Line Up while I was living in southern Spain, where I spent several months on a ranch and regularly went to local horse festivals and equestrian events. It was a wonderful time for me photographically because I could spend so much time around the horses, riders and traditions of the region.
What caught my attention here was the way the horses had lined up almost shoulder to shoulder with their riders behind them. I liked the repetition of their heads and bridles across the frame and waited until the arrangement felt balanced before taking the photograph.
I chose black and white because it simplified a busy scene and brought more attention to the horses themselves — their expressions, the tack and the rhythm created by the line.
