I photographed The Youngster in the New Forest National Park, a place where I have spent many days walking and looking for horses to photograph. I have always enjoyed seeing them roaming freely there, particularly when you come across a young foal like this one.
What caught my attention was the way this youngster stood looking directly towards me, curious and alert but completely at ease in its surroundings. I liked the simplicity of the scene and the slightly awkward, long-legged appearance that young horses have at this age.
Having grown up around horses, I have always felt comfortable photographing them and waiting quietly for these little moments of character to appear. I chose black and white because it keeps the attention on the foal itself, its expression and its delicate young form.
