I made this photograph while lying on my paddleboard, keeping myself as low to the water as I could. From that level the sea seemed to stretch away almost endlessly, with very little separating the water from the pale sky.
The scene was already beautifully simple, but the solitary gull gave me the small point of movement I needed. I waited until it was in the right position before making the photograph.
What I like most about Blue Flight is its openness. There is very little competing for attention, just the soft blue water, the distant horizon and that single bird moving through the frame.
