I photographed Diving Gulls from my paddleboard, which gave me a very different viewpoint from shooting from the shore. Being out on the water allowed me to watch the gulls much more closely as they circled above the sea and repeatedly dived down for fish.
I liked the way the birds were scattered across the pale sky and blue water, with some flying and others dropping towards the surface. From the paddleboard I was almost at water level, and that low viewpoint helped give the photograph the open, spacious feeling I was looking for.
It is one of those scenes that looks quite peaceful in a still photograph, even though there was constant movement going on around me. For me, that contrast between the calm blue sea and the activity of the gulls is what makes the image work.
