Hope in the Storm

I photographed Hope in the Storm from the sea using my camera housing. The weather was stormy, the waves were powerful and there was spray everywhere. I've always loved being in the ocean, and being out there photographing in those conditions was exhilarating.

I could see the lighthouse beyond the surf, but I wanted the breaking waves to become an important part of the photograph. I waited for a wave to break in front of the lighthouse, creating the atmosphere I had in mind. When it finally happened, the movement of the water, the spray and the stormy sky all came together.

What I particularly love about this image is the contrast between the wild sea and the lighthouse standing firm in the distance. Despite everything happening around it, the lighthouse seemed to offer a sense of hope. That's how the photograph got its name.

Hope in the Storm is available as a limited-edition fine art seascape photography print, particularly striking at large scale, where the detail and energy of the breaking wave can really be appreciated.
