I photographed Pastel Clouds from a clifftop in Swanage, Dorset, on a winter afternoon, just as a rainstorm was beginning to clear. What caught my attention was the sudden change in the sky, with soft pink, lavender and pale blue beginning to appear through the retreating weather.
I stayed there watching the light change, waiting until the colours and cloud formations felt right before making the photograph. I’ve always been fascinated by these brief changes in weather and light, when a familiar stretch of coast can look completely different for only a few minutes.
What I particularly like about this image is the softness of the colour against the remaining storm clouds. It has a quietness to it, but you can still sense the weather that has just passed.
