For Sunrise in Motion III, I wanted to do something different with the colours of dawn rather than make a conventional sunrise photograph. I used a slow shutter speed together with deliberate camera movement, allowing the sea, horizon and early light to blend into long horizontal bands.
I particularly liked the contrast between the warm orange glow above the horizon and the cooler, darker tones of the water below. The movement removed much of the detail from the scene and left me with something more abstract, where colour and atmosphere became more important than the actual landscape.
This is one of the things I enjoy about working around the sea at dawn. The light can change incredibly quickly, and experimenting with movement gives me another way of interpreting what is happening rather than simply recording it.
