I photographed Wave Flock from the clifftops at Nazaré in Portugal. From up there you get a completely different view of the sea, looking down onto the waves rather than across them from the shore.
I had been watching a large flock of gulls gathering above the breaking waves. As each wave rose and broke, small fish were being thrown into the air and the birds would suddenly dive towards the water. It was fascinating to watch.
I waited until the shape of the wave and the flock came together in the frame. I particularly liked the contrast between the power of the sea and all those much smaller birds above it, with the turquoise water helping them stand out.
From the clifftop you can really see the scale of the wave and the amount of activity happening across the water, which is what I like most about this photograph.
