I photographed Dancing on Waves in the Canary Islands during the winter, when the Atlantic often produces some wonderful conditions for surfing.
What caught my eye was the silhouette of the surfer and the poise and grace in the way his body moved across the wave. There was something almost dancer-like about it — the balance, the position of his arms and the way he seemed completely at ease despite all the movement beneath him.
That was really what gave me the title Dancing on Waves. I chose black and white because it stripped away the distractions of colour and made the shape of the surfer, the spray and the movement of the wave much more important.
For me, it is less about the size of the wave and more about that brief moment of balance and grace between the surfer and the sea.
