Red Surfer was photographed from the cliffs above Nazaré, Portugal, while I was watching surfers take on the powerful Atlantic swell below. What first caught my attention was the tiny figure of the surfer against the immense scale of the wave, but the vivid red board against the turquoise water made the scene impossible to ignore. I waited until the rider’s position and the shape of the breaking wave came together in a way that felt balanced before making the photograph.
I’ve always been fascinated by the way a surfer can appear both completely at home and incredibly vulnerable within a powerful sea. That contrast is what gives this image its energy for me.
