I made this photograph when an ordinary moment on the beach suddenly became something much more abstract. The surfer’s reflection in the wet sand had reduced the figure almost to a silhouette, and I waited until the position of the surfer and the reflection felt balanced before taking the photograph.

I chose black and white because it strips the scene back to shape, texture and reflection. There is very little competing for attention, which is part of what I like about the image, and the square composition adds to that sense of balance and simplicity.
