I made this photograph early one morning in Hossegor on the south west coast of France. Mist had settled over the beach and the surfers were standing quietly at the shoreline, looking out towards the sea.
What appealed to me was how the haze softened almost everything except the figures. The surfers became silhouettes against the pale morning light, and the whole scene had a stillness that felt very different from the energy I usually associate with surfing.
Black and white suited the photograph because it kept the attention on the shapes, the light and the quiet atmosphere. The moment lasted only briefly, but it stayed with me afterwards.
