I have been photographing surfers for around 25 years now, and it is still a subject I never tire of. There is always something different happening in the water, and the combination of movement, changing light and the skill of the surfers means you are constantly looking for the next photograph.
With Turquoise Tube Rider, I managed to catch the surfer at that wonderful moment when he was tucked right inside the wave. I love the way he is crouched low on the board while the turquoise water curls around him. Everything happens so quickly in surfing that you have to anticipate where the rider is going to be and be ready before the moment arrives.
Over the years I have built up a large archive of surfing photographs, but images like this are still particularly satisfying. The colour of the wave, the shape of the breaking water and the position of the surfer all came together for just a fraction of a second.
