I made this portrait while travelling through South Africa on a road trip. I came across this young boy standing by the roadside selling feather dusters made from ostrich feathers, and it became one of those unexpected encounters that has stayed with me.
His direct gaze was what made the photograph for me. There was something very still and self-assured about the way he looked into the camera, while the ostrich feathers around him created an unusual natural frame for his face.
I chose black and white because I wanted the attention to stay on his expression, his eyes and the textures within the portrait. Travelling with a camera has given me many unexpected moments over the years, and this is one of the portraits I still remember particularly well.
