What appealed to me about Liquid was that it didn’t feel like a typical wave photograph. There was something much more artistic and mysterious about the way the light was catching the water, with parts of the wave emerging from the darkness while other areas almost disappeared into it.
I was less interested in showing the wave simply as a powerful piece of ocean and more interested in the shapes, tones and movement within it. Converting the image to black and white helped take it even further away from a straightforward seascape and made the photograph feel more abstract.
I particularly like that you don’t take everything in immediately. The longer you look at it, the more detail begins to appear in the spray and the surface of the water. For me, that sense of mystery is what makes Liquid different from many of my other wave photographs.
