TURQUOISE BOOM
I photographed Turquoise Boom at NazarΓ© in Portugal, a place I had wanted to spend time photographing because of the extraordinary power of the Atlantic there. The waves can be immense, but what interested me with this particular one was not only its size, but the incredible turquoise colour running through the water as it began to break.
I spent quite a while watching the sets come through and waiting for the right combination of shape, colour and spray. When this wave finally folded over, the deep turquoise water and the burst of white foam gave the photograph exactly the energy I had been hoping for.
That contrast between beautiful colour and enormous force is what I remember most about the scene. It is one of the things that keeps drawing me back to photographing waves, because no two ever seem to break in quite the same way.
