I photographed Turquoise Thunder at North Beach in Nazaré, Portugal, where the Atlantic can produce some truly extraordinary waves. What drew me to this image was the wonderful turquoise colour running through the water at the very moment the wave began to break.

There is huge power in the sea here, with white water exploding across the frame, yet at the same time the colour brings a surprising softness and beauty to it. I liked that contrast straight away — the force of the breaking wave alongside those luminous turquoise tones.

This is an image that works especially well at large scale, where the texture, movement and detail in the water really come alive.
