Hibiscus in Pink was photographed in the Canary Islands as part of my continuing study of hibiscus flowers. Among the more vivid varieties I had been photographing, this particular bloom appealed to me for almost the opposite reason — the softness of its colour. The delicate pink petals against the pale background created a much quieter image, and I wanted to preserve that subtlety rather than make the flower appear more dramatic than it was.
I composed the photograph as a square so the bloom could sit very simply within the frame, allowing its shape, texture and gentle variations of pink to become the focus. Hibiscus in Pink is available as a limited-edition fine art flower photograph, with a calm, understated character that suits both contemporary and more traditional interiors.
