As a lifelong watersports enthusiast, I have always felt a special connection to the sea. Surfing photography brings together many of the things that have shaped my work — movement, light, changing water and the relationship between people and the ocean. I’m especially drawn to those fleeting moments when the surfer, the wave and the light seem to come together naturally.
I photograph surfing instinctively, watching the rhythm of the sea and the movement of the surfer rather than working to a fixed idea. Some photographs are made from the shoreline, while others bring me much closer to the water itself. A large panoramic black and white photograph of a Husky standing guard over his owners surfboard on North Beach, Nazare. This dog caught my eye as he was so beautiful and he was patiently waiting for his master to return from the sea. The scene made for a wonderful minimalistic monochrome image.
