I saw this sailing boat approaching and realised there might be an opportunity to photograph it as it passed between the breaking waves. I watched its progress and waited for the moment when the boat appeared in the gap between them.
What I liked was the contrast between the small, calm shape of the boat and all the movement and energy of the sea around it. The deep blue water and the white breaking waves helped separate the boat from the scene and gave the photograph its strong panoramic feel.
For me, this photograph is also about being ready when something unexpected comes into the frame. The boat was only in the right position for a very short time, and that was the moment I had been waiting for.
