Cernonos was photographed while I was walking through the forest at Klampenborg, near Copenhagen. I came across this stag standing apart while the rest of the herd grazed nearby, and what caught my attention was the way he seemed to hold his ground and watch over the scene around him. I stayed quietly at a distance and waited until his posture and the surrounding woodland came together in a way that felt right.
Wildlife encounters like this are often completely unexpected, which is part of what I enjoy about travelling with a camera. There was a wonderful combination of strength and stillness in this stag that I wanted to preserve.
