Champagne was photographed from the cliffs above Nazaré, Portugal, while a powerful Atlantic swell was breaking below. Having grown up around the sea, I’ve always been fascinated by the moment when a wave changes from a clean shape into something much more chaotic and unpredictable. Here, it was the explosion of whitewater, the shifting texture of the surface and the soft silver-blue light that held my attention. I waited until the breaking wave reached that brief point where all of those elements came together before making the photograph.
What I particularly like about Champagne is the contrast between the force of the ocean and the delicacy of the spray. The square composition concentrates that energy into a very simple frame, giving the image a strong presence at larger sizes.
